Sweet moments

Sudoku does it. Jigsaw puzzles do it. Spider solitaire does it sometimes. And it sometimes happens in real life: maybe when you’re wallpapering a room, making a fancy meal or balancing your finances. They all start out looking fairly easy, then there’s a big struggle, and then suddenly you get the moment when it all comes together, and it’s downhill all the way from there.

It had been like that for Moses. First there had been the excitement of seeing the burning bush; then there had been the struggle to contemplate what God was asking him to do, with issues of faith, confidence and motivation. His life had even been threatened. Now (Exodus 4:27 –31) in one fell swoop it all came together. His long-lost brother arrived in a joyful reunion; God had spoken to Aaron and confirmed Moses’ role; the elders of Israel welcomed them; God showed up with signs and wonders; the people believed and were overjoyed; at last they knew that God had seen their misery, and that he cared! Oh how they worshipped. What joy!

There are times in life when we feel called to a particular project; God directs us, and all seems to be rosy. Then the rubber hits the road, and we discover that it all takes some working at. Sometimes our confidence may flounder, or our faith struggles to be certain that we heard right. Sometimes it all just seems too hard. But maybe, like Moses, it’s all about to come together. For him, that was just one of life’s many battles, but it was one in the bag. There were many struggles ahead, but this was one sweet moment. You may be aware that there are still battles ahead, but when you get one of those sweet moments, when things do come together, cherish and enjoy it. Hold it as a memory to give you strength for the next leg of the journey.
