A generation or two ago, Christians often had a ‘promise box’. That was a box with little rolled up papers, each of which had a promise verse from scripture. They would randomly select a paper, to read the promise. We may find it a little twee, but if it encourages you, and reminds you of all that God has promised, that can only be helpful.
Truth is, God has promised us soooooo many things, we do need reminding. Some things are general, like the scriptures in a promise box; but sometimes God speaks into our hearts something that is a promise or a direction specific to us, in our current situation, or for our future.
How do we respond? – Forget it, it’s just wishful thinking? Put it on the shelf to consider later – then forget all about it? Press in and make it happen – if God’s said it, I will claim it!
Just imagine if we followed up every promise with an action plan and didn’t give up until we’d brought each one into fulfilment…What would the Kingdom of God look like then???
God had promised the land to Abram in Genesis 12 v 7, and he repeats it in more detail here in Genesis 13 v 14-17. ‘Lift up your eyes…look!’ Maybe Abram needed reminding too!
Abram moved out of his comfort zone (the bit between Bethel and Ai, where he’d returned to) then he set up camp and built an altar to the Lord. It was going to be a long time before the full truth of that promise became a reality, but Abram began to think of himself as in possession of it. He activated it as far as he could.
What has God promised me – either in Scripture, or direct into my heart? What am I going to do about it now? First thing I’m going to do, is ask God for forgiveness that I haven’t taken these things seriously, ask him to remind me of them again – ‘Lift up your eyes…look!’ and then begin the action plans…how about you?
